During the last decades computer technology has developed in an accelerated way. This rate of development has created a gap between the young generation, which uses and adheres to the computer technology, and the old generation, which feels that, is too difficult to learn something new.
Computer technology and the old generation
In the past, computers were used very rare and personal computer was only a dream. Nowadays, computers are cheaper and most of us are able to buy such a device for their personal use. Besides, most of the tasks that have to be done during our jobs are related with computer technology. But this strong development of computer technology is not an advantage for the old generation. Most of those that are 65+ are not using a computer because they don’t have the necessary training to do this or they don’t want to learn at their age. In order to use computers, the older generation has to return to schools and to learn how to use a computer. If this step is their decision, this may be seen as a way of continuing development. But if this step is a need in order to keep their job, then it may be seen as another challenge for those that have built our society in the past.
Computer technology and the young generation
For the young generation, computer technology is something common. Most of the children have computers in their homes and they are starting to learn how to use such a device during the first years of school. Due to this, when they become adults, they consider that computers represent something common and when they have to solve tasks at their jobs, they are feeling confident that they will manage to do this. Despite all the advantages of computer technology, the young generation has other temptations regarding the computer technology. One of these temptations is the time spent in front of the computer, which sometimes means the entire day. This situation may generate problems such as inactivity and obesity. But on the other hand, the young generation is that generation that supports the actual economy, which is mostly based on computer technologies.
The gap between past and present in computer technology usage
Each progress is causing a gap between past and present. The rapid growth and development of computer technology are not an exception. For the old generation, computer technology fast development represents a difficult challenge, but on the other hand, for the young generation computers technology is the present and the future. Even if the old generation has started to learn how to use computers and their benefits, there are only about 60% of people in developed countries that are using the internet and computers in their daily life.
This gap between the old generation and the young generation regarding computer usage may be solved if young people will give a helping hand to their parents, grandparents or older relatives. In this way, learning how to use and benefit from computer technologies would look less difficult for the older generation.
